Would it be a good idea to pair a female german shepherd with a male australian blue-heeler cattle dog!?

I’d appreciate any guidance on this matter for I am new in dog ownership. My neighbor is asking me permission to pair his male australian blue-heeler cattle dog with my female german shepherd. I don’t know if to let that be for I ignore if the litter would be good. This would be the first time for my german shepherd Cloe currently in heat. Anybody who has knowledge of this I would appreciate your advice. Thank you!

The answer is definitely “NO!!!”

First off, you obtained your pet as a PET-ONLY, not as breeding & showing prospect. And as well as being too young (about equivalent to a 10 or 11 year old girl being forced to get pregnant then rear triplets), she is NOT breed-worthy. It is axiomatic that anyone who has to ask a breeding-type question HERE, instead of in the right places, does not a have a breed-worthy pet.
If your pet WAS of breeding quality you would be asking:
• Her experienced breeder
• Your breed-mentor
• The experienced people at the club where you train & test her to prove her breed-worthy (or not breed-worthy).
You might also have asked:
• The experienced people in the e-group of GSD owners that you belong to.

But you have NONE of those sources available to you.
Q.E.D. she’s not of breeding quality.

Your pet is not yet old enough to have passed ANY of them; your question makes it obvious that you don’t compete in shows, so she doesn’t have any grading certificates even – not that a “Good” or better certificate can be awarded at younger than 12 months old.

Secondly, it takes generations of CAREFULLY selective breeding to produce a functional GSD (or a functional ACD, whatever). Each of the traits needed by a breed – attitude, biddability, character, determination, endurance, instincts, nimbleness-vs-power, proportions, size – is the result of a COLLECTION of genes, not just a single gene. As soon as you cross-breed you HALVE the available number of genes in each breed’s collection, replacing them with half the collection of genes that are needed by the other breed. And so the pups are “neither-nor.”
In the example that your ignorant neighbour wants, the pups will be neither instinctively sheep-herding-&-protecting pooches, nor instinctively cattle-herding pooches.

Thirdly: All liability for the pups is on YOU.
If something goes wrong at about whelping time, or if the whelps develop parvovirus , it is YOU that must pay the vet bills. It is YOU who must feed the pups (and – if the dam dies – YOU must hand-feed each one every 2 hours, night & day, plus gently massage their genitals so that they piddle & poo for you to clean up). If the pups were incubating parvo or distemper before the owners collected them (and so they needed IV drips etc at the clinic), or something genetic afflicts the pups after you sell them or give them away, it is YOU that the owners will sue for compensation.

Breeding should be left to the hobby breeders, who have a plan for what improvements they wish to improve in their stock & where they will get the necessary genes from, and who aim to produce pups that will be highly suitable for a particular type of activity.

If becoming a breeder appeals to you, do it PROPERLY – start by joining a GSD club and beginning to find out whether she has managed to be breed-worthy, plus get a mentor to help you learn about the breed & the better blood-lines in it. And sort out which field of “GSD tasks” you want your pups to be successful in.
Otherwise, neuter her when she is at least 11-15 months old.

But DON’T be persuaded by an ignorant randy neighbour (especially one with a low-quality randy pooch) to start CROSS-breeding! It might also pay to tell him that if his dog mates your bit.ch you will charge the owner for her neutering etc.

If you fail to keep her away from all males while she is on heat, don’t panic – have her neutered about 2 weeks after the mating (neutering a bit.ch while she is on-heat is VERY risky, for internal haemorrhaging), no later than 21 days after the mating.

And the word isn’t “pair”, it is “mate”.
